Yak Linked With West Ham, Gets Toffees Backing

West Ham United are reportedly considering a move for Blackburn striker Yakubu.

The Nigeria forward has netted 13 goals for Rovers this season including four against Swansea last month.

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is searching for a striker to boost their promotion hopes and a move for the 29-year-old could be on the cards.

Meanwhile Everton assistant coach,Steve Round is happy for Yakubu over his goal scoring form with Blackburn Rovers.

While Round is pleased to see him rediscovering his form elsewhere, he knows there are absolutely no guarantees he would have scored anything like that sort of return had he stayed at Goodison.

"“I have known Yakubu a long time,” Round told evertontv. “We signed him from Portsmouth when I worked at Middlesbrough. First season he got 20 goals, the next a couple less and the season after that a few less than that.

“Then he moved on to Everton and first season got 20 odd goals. There is no question Yak is a very good player. He was very unlucky at Everton – he had a horrendous injury. He ruptured his Achilles which was a career threatening injury – one that can finish you – he overcame that but it got to the stage where he had one year left on his contract and do you wait until he leaves for nothing, or at that stage do you make the money you can?

“I think it was best for all concerned that he had a fresh challenge and we generated some revenue. We all wish him well. He’s a great lad and a lovely guy to work with.

“He has had a good start at Blackburn and I hope for his sake - and for theirs - that it continues. Fortunately for us he can’t play on Saturday.”

Everton Assistant Coach Backs Anichebe To Shine

Everton assistant boss Steve Round has backed striker Victor Anichebe to put his fitness worries behind him.

The striker has netted twice since returning from injury and Round believes he will come good during the second half of the campaign and put his recent fitness problems behind him.

"Victor is a really good player," Round told the Post. "He is strong and aggressive, he holds the ball up well and has great technique.

"He needs to score more goals and he'd admit that.

"He needs to get into more scoring positions, but he has started well (since returning from injury). He has got a couple of goals and he always looks a threat.

"The most important thing for Victor is to train and stay fit and, if he can do that for the remainder of the season, then it will be a big, big bonus for us.”

FG, Oil Firms to Review Gas Sale Agreement

2606F08.Barth-Nnaji.jpg - 2606F08.Barth-Nnaji.jpg
Minister of Power, Prof. Bartholomew Nnaji
The Minister of Power, Prof. Bartholomew Nnaji,  has disclosed that the Federal government was currently working out modalities for the execution of a market-based pricing regime for gas supply to power plants from oil companies in the country.
Nnaji said the new pricing regime on gas supply to existing gas turbine power plants in the country was scheduled to be reviewed within this month to reflect government’s plan to incentivise gas supply to the power plants by distributors.
According to him, the price regime, which currently stands at 60 cents per unit will likely increase to about $1 per unit at the completion of negotiations between the government and oil companies.
He said: “Government is working out modalities for the execution of a market-based pricing regime for gas supply to power plants as agreed with oil companies, the regime is scheduled to be reviewed within this month to reflect government’s plan to incentivise gas supply to the power plants by distributors and I think gas price which is currently at 60 cents per unit will increase to about $1 soon.”
The minister explained that the review became necessary at this point when government was poised to improve power generation, adding that the challenges of getting gas to power plants has continually hampered the generation and distribution of adequate power by these plants. He added that the Federal government was working round the clock to offset these challenges.
Nnaji equally stated that the availability and sustainability of gas supply to existing gas turbine power plants in the country has remained stable for a while now with adequate gas feedstock available for distributed to the power plants.  But he added that the country still contended with the challenges of poor gas distribution infrastructures.
“At this point, in terms of quantum there is adequate gas availability, it is just about getting the gas to all the plants particularly, gas going to plants in the western axis. There is an ongoing work to ensure that the gas line that will ensure reliability is standardised. I cannot tell you right here the exact date of its expected completion but the government is committed to addressing the problem of gas supply in that axis.
“What we will like to do with gas supply is line up the plants that are being designed with gas supply for those that are gas fired so this way before the plants get completed you have gas available. And the government has moved to ensure that other relevant ministries like petroleum resources are involved in this processes to ensure proper alignment of stakeholders and agencies in this regards, so there is actual commitment for the infrastructure for gas delivery to be delivered as well as the actual gas itself,” Nnaji said.
Other plans by the government in the power sector as revealed by the minister include the planned privatisation and or concessioning of the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPPs) by 2014 when the country must have achieved some modicum of stability in power generation and distribution.
He stated that by 2014, each of the NIPP plants would,  according to worked-out plans by the government, be treated as individual companies with duties and responsibilities delegated to its constituted management just like what is currently obtained at the Egbin and Shiroro power plants.
He disclosed that   government would,  in line with this plan, compel the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to issue operating licences to the companies that will emerge from the NIPPs. According to him,   the licences will pave the way for them to enter into power generation and distribution agreements with relevant agencies of the government.
“By 2014, when we expect more power in the national grid, each NIPP plant will be treated as an individual firm, the NIPP plants will also become individual companies and we will have to talk to the electricity regulatory commission to issue them licences otherwise it becomes difficult for them to sign power agreements like power purchase and gas supply agreement with relevant agencies, by then we will have to determine whether they will be concessioned or privatised,” he stated.

Zenith Bank Posts N35bn Profit

Zenith Bank Plc, Headquarters
Zenith Bank Plc Monday  reported impressive financial results for the second quarter (Q2) ended June 30, 2011 with  profit after tax(PAT) rising by 44 per cent.
The results made available to stockbrokers during trading by the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) showed a gross earnings of N122.84 billion, up by 27 per cent from N96.85 billion in corresponding period of 2010.
Pre-tax profit rose by 38.2 per cent to N35.05 billion from N25.34 billion in the 2011, while profit after tax grew by 44 per cent from N21.3 billion to 30.67 billion in 2011.
Also, margins firmed strongly as pre- and post- tax margins rose from 26.16 per cent  and
21.99 per cent 2010 to 28.53 per cent and 24.97 per cent in 2011.
This, analysts  at Cordros Capital Limited, said was a strong indication of the bank’s profitability and efficiency.
The bank’s total assets increased from the N2.608 trillion reported in 2010 to N2.847 trillion as at Q2 2011.
“We forecast that margins will remain upbeat for the financial year end 2011, or at worst remain flat across the board, given the on-going rising rate environment. We also believe that the bank’s non-performing loans (NPLs) should continue their downward trend. We forecast Zenith Bank’s  full  year  2011 EPS at N1.68 coming off the back of a projected PAT of N52.752 billion.  We hereby place a six months BUY on Zenith Bank Plc with a target price of N21.15,” Cordros Capital said.
The Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, Mr. Steve Omojafor, had told  shareholders at  the Annual General Meeting(AGM) of the bank  recently  that  even in the face of very challenging operating environment, the bank had maintained its culture of outstanding performance and industry leadership.
According to him, the bank remains committed to delivering superior returns to its shareholders.  Shareholders of the bank received a dividend of N26.6 billion, which translates into 85 kobo per share for the year ended December 31, 2010.
Meanwhile, despite the results coming from the banking sector, investors’ demand for equities remained weak  at the stock market yesterday, leading to decline in the NSE All-Share Index and market capitalisation.
Both indicators, which have been sliding since the beginning of July had witnessed a rebound last Friday. However, the positive performance could not be sustained  Monday as the index fell by 0.50 per cent to close at 23,711.90, while the market capitalisation of equities shed N38 billion to close at N7.582 trillion.
Twenty-nine stocks lost value as against 19 that added value, while investors traded 230.923 million shares worth N1.954 billion in 4,218 deals.

N38bn Loan: Bankole Seeks Keyamo’s Disqualification

160611Tdimeji-bankole.jpg - 160611Tdimeji-bankole.jpg
Dimeji Bankole, Former House Speaker
Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, Monday filed an application before an Abuja High Court asking for an order to disqualify Mr. Festus Keyamo who was appointed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to prosecute him for illegally obtaining  N38 billion loan.
The application which was filed by his lawyer, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo SAN, was premised on the ground that Keyamo had embarked on persecution of Bankole while he was in office as speaker.
Awomolo further premised the application on the following grounds: “That Mr. Keyamo as a private legal practitioner had envisaged the applicant in battles of allegation of corruption as the Speaker of the House of Reps which failed and was dismissed by the House Ethics Committee.
“That the prosecution of this case by Keyamo is a continuation of persecution, to destroy the applicant, an attack he had begun since October 2008.
“The prosecution of the allegation in this court by Keyamo can neither be objective nor inspire confidence or impartiality and independence as prosecutor,” he stated.
Bankole also stated that the prosecution by Keyamo was perceived as a continuation of hostility, antagonism and personal vendetta, using the prosecutorial power of the state.
He also claimed that allowing Keyamo to prosecute the case would amount to a violation of his right to fair hearing.
Citing the provisions of the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act and the National Assembly Service Commission Act, Bankole had said that no court has the jurisdiction to try him for anything done by him while exercising his powers as the speaker of the lower chamber.
In an application to quash the charges of illegally obtaining N38 billion loans levelled against him before an Abuja High Court, Bankole,  said that there was no shred of evidence to sustain the 17 count charges.
He consequently asked the court to direct the chairman of the EFCC, Mrs. Farida Waziri to publicly apologize to him for public humiliation, denial of personal liberty, unlawful detention and discomfort to his person and family since Sunday 5th June, 2011.
In the application, Bankole’s lawyers punctured the entire charges one after the other claiming that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was acting under the mis-apprehension of the law or was merely persecuting the former speaker.
He asked the court to quash the charges also on the ground that EFCC had neither statutory nor constitutional power to issue authority to a private prosecutor, to prosecute offences created by or under the Penal Code Act in any court of law, without the FIAT of the Attorney-General of the Federation first being sought and obtained and usage of the powers as a vindictive weapon against the applicant.

Boko Haram crisis: Ogun evacuates indigenes from Borno

Hundreds of Ogun State indegenes resident in Maduguri and other cities in Borno state, northeast Nigeria, were over the weekend evacuated from the crisis-ridden state by the state government as tension over the security of lives and property continues to mount following the activities of the Boko Haram sect.
Sola Adeyemi, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Environment, while welcoming the rescued citizens in Abeokuta, the state capital, noted that the rescue mission was in fulfillment of the promise made by the state governor, Ibikunle Amosun, to protect lives and property of the people of the state wherever they are and whenever it is needed.
He hinted journalists that a team, which was led by the director of the State Emergency Maintenance Agency (SEMA), Timothy Oyenekan, was dispatched to Maiduguri after receiving distress calls from the students studying at the University of Maiduguri, whose school had been shut down since Tuesday, July 12 when the authorities made known its inability to provide them security.
Taiwo Sokanlu, who spoke on behalf of other students, thanked the state government, especially Amosun for the quick intervention, saying, “Maybe we would have been victims of (the) explosion because it happened very close to where some of us reside.”

Boko Haram: Oshiomhole receives Edo returnees

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State yesterday received students of Edo State origin who were evacuated from the crisis torn Borno State. He called on them to have faith in the unity of the country. The state government had on Wednesday sent buses to Maiduguri to rescue its indigenes who are schooling at the University of Maiduguri. The university was closed by the authorities owing to the threat by the book Haram sect.
A total of 150 persons including children were rescued.
Addressing the returnees, Oshiomhole disclosed that the closure of the Maiduguri airport stopped him from sending an aircraft to rescue them. He expressed optimism that the Boko Haram crisis would soon be over adding that the authorities of the University took the right decision in closing the institution until the crisis is over.
He said, “You are welcome back home. I heard of the challenges in Maiduguri, it is very unfortunate. Nigeria is our country. You don’t need visa to travel to any part of the country. You don’t need any residence permit. You should not be refugee in the country. In no distant time, I hope we’ll find solution to our national problem so that there will be peace across the country.
“I asked you to have faith in the country, don’t allow yourself to be reduced to ethnic champions. Continue to believe that Nigeria is our country and we have a right to live in any part of it and we will live in any part of it. Nothing should scare us to say I will not live in this part again. It is a matter of time. The country belongs to you. The present crisis should not weaken your faith in the unity of Nigeria.”
Earlier, leader of the students, Mohammed Abdulazeez said they fled because of the continued insecurity in Borno State adding that they could no longer cope with the crisis.

BOMB BLAST @ ABUJA CAUSE BY BOKO HARAM @ POLICE HEAD QUARTERS, ABUJA

Fire fighters at the scene of the bomb blast at the Car Park, Police Force Headquarters, Abuja

Bomb Rocks Kaduna By BOKO HARAM

The Islamic extremist movement, Boko Haram, may have made good its earlier threat to send its bombers to Kaduna as a bomb exploded from a refuse dump in Obalaende area of Kaduna on Sunday night. The site is said to be close to a popular drinking joint in the area.
There were no casualties but scores of persons were said to have sustained various degrees of injuries when the bomb went off at about 20.30 pm that even Sunday night.
"So my friend rushed me to Rekiya Memorial hospital where I was treated. Also, about seven of my friends who were at the place when the bomb blasted were injured but they were treated in the hospital and discharged.
Reports said the bomb exploded from a big drum used as a refuse dump along Forcados street, close to Ebeano Hotel, at Obalende, a popular hang out in the Kaduna metropolis, notorious for its large population of commercial sex workers.
Another eyewitness who gave her name as Chika said: "The bomb exploded some few minutes past 10 pm and I was standing with my friend in front of their house."
The explosion reportedly sent night crawlers running helter skelter while residents in the area screamed for help.
The Hotel manager, Steve Adeyemi, said: "When the bomb exploded I was not around. I left the hotel at about 9.30 pm to my house but on reaching home, one of my boys called and said that there was a problem, that he heard a bomb blast, and that he did not know where the bomb blast happened. He later called me that it was outside the hotel.
"I started making calls, asking people, and people also started calling me that some people who were standing outside were injured but I did not know they were outside, so I had to drive there and I discovered that it was opposite one Alhaji's house.
"The bomb was dropped in a drum, a dustbin and it scattered many things and many people injured.
"It is only one girl in my hotel that sustained injury on her way to go and see somebody outside.
"We have security police who is taking care of this house, his name is Tukur from Magaji Garin police station.
"The police were here that night, they parked their patrol vehicle here, and it is like the thing happen in their presence, but I left them there, and told them that I was going home."
District Head of the area, Alhaji Bala Tijani, who visited the scene in the morning yesterday said that, "we pray that it does not happen again.
"It is rather unfortunate; we pray that those who were injured recover very fast. We will continue to appeal to the police to be on top of the security, we will also continue to do our best and that is all I can say."

Borno -Five Killed in Another Bomb Explosion

No fewer than five persons lost their lives in Maiduguri ,the Borno state capital Tuesday when the Islamic fundamentalist group, Boko Haram ,reportedly threw an explosive at a patrol vehicle of the Joint Military Task Force. It was gathered that an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was thrown at a moving military patrol van near Fannah Dori Filling Station along Baga road in Maiduguri at about 8am on Tuesday by persons suspected to be members of Boko Haram during which two soldiers reportedly sustained injuries.
JTF in a statement issued Tuesday claimed "there was an explosion at Baga road this morning targeted at a patrol team of JTF. Three of the attackers died in the blast and two soldiers were injured."
But eyewitnesses said three persons were actually killed by soldiers and not the members of the fundamentalists as claimed by the JTF .
Eyewitnesses also claimed that two more corpses were evacuated by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) near the scene of the incident, two hours after the early morning explosion.
NEMA zonal Information Officer (North East), Ibrahim Farinloye confirmed to journalists that two corpses were picked near the scene of the incident but declined to give further details.
"We were just informed about the corpses but we are trying to assist traders in Baga market who were trapped following the bomb explosion this morning and the gun shots. We were negotiating with the NURTW in the market so as to help people check out of the place," Farinloye explained.
The NEMA spokesman also revealed that another explosion affected a NEMA vehicle when officials of the agency were moving to the scene of the first blast along Baga road.
He said only the agency's vehicle was damaged while none of the personnel was injured.
Also in the JTF press release signed by Colonel Victor Ebhaleme, it was maintained that the claims that the soldiers were shooting indiscriminately was untrue.
The statement read "the Joint Task Force, Operation Restore Order in Maiduguri wishes to debunk claims that soldiers are involved in any indiscriminate treatment of law abiding members of the public.

"The claims are baseless and uncalled for at a moment when the state is facing challenging security situation. We want to reassure the general public that members of the JTF will never act in anyway against the peace of the state."
The JTF blamed members of Boko Haram of planting Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) at residential areas which exploded and damaged houses and vehicles, asking for vigilance on the part of the public.
Members of the public are also asked to disregard the rumour going round that people should leave Maiduguri, stressing that it was baseless as the soldiers will soon fish out the fundamentalists and "their sympathizers who resorted to spreading the rumour in order to instill fear in the people."

Nigeria: 'Only Peace Talk Will Solve Boko Haram Crisis'

The chairman of the Abuja branch of the G20 has said that only peace talks with the Boko Haram sect would end the current reign of terror. Hon. Habila Aderefun said yesterday that with the honour of his Board of Trustees Chairman Engr. Ishaku Tikon as an Ambassador for PEACE, he will be able to help the federal government in tackling the Boko Haram syndrome in the country.
According to Aderefun, "Tikon is a peaceful person and deserved the award because he has done so much in the lives of humans. G20 which I chaired is his idea. We are happy because G20 did not recommended him for the award but someone out there who has been seeing his contribution in National development and peace. We belief with the award, he will be able to help the Federal government in tackling the issue of Boko Haram in the country". He said
The Boad of Trustees chairman of the G20 club Abuja branch, Engr. Ishaku Tikon, was yesterday conferred with the prestigious award of PEACE Ambassador by the Universal Peace Federation (UPF).

Conferring the honour on Tikon, the Zonal Coordinator UPF Ambassador Monday O Akhilomen said that the award followed his contribution toward ensuring peace in his home state Taraba and Nigeria as a whole. "Following Tiko's nomination by someone from Benue state which was properly investigated, we hereby confer on Ishaku Tikon with the honour of PEACE Ambassador.
"We are looking for people who will work for peace. From our report, Tikon has contributed immensely in religious activities and the award is based on his hard work. "He has also upheld the international moral values without religious barriers which has affected many people, not only in Nigeria, but in the world", Akhilomen stated.
